Adding data to decision making
As Vienna’s main provider of infrastructure services, Wiener Stadtwerke’s corporate fleet includes over 2,000 vehicles, mainly powered by petrol and diesel. By 2030 that number is expected to be completely made up of electric vehicles only – a big challenge that comes with many questions. Most importantly: Which electric vehicles to choose, which battery capacities to select and how to best go about implementing an effective, company-wide charging infrastructure. In order to allow for data-based decision making along the way, Wiener Stadtwerke implemented a comprehensive company vehicle dashboard supplying them with important data to help turning one of Vienna’s largest companies into an even more climate-friendly enterprise.

How it works
The dashboard is a joint effort of Vienna’s main energy provider (Wiener Netze) and the city’s public transport organization (Wiener Linien), both subsidiary companies of Wiener Stadtwerke. It started out small: Using data from the current electric fleet, the project team focused on a select number of Wiener Stadtwerke companies and made recommendations for how to best make the switch to full-on electric mobility. Using the experience collected during this phase, they then went on to create a company-wide dashboard, which includes valuable data on all 2,000 vehicles in the corporate fleet. This dashboard serves as the go-to platform for the experts in charge of organizing the “big switch”, and is a key source of information for planning when, how and in which order to implement changes. Additionally, as the data refreshes monthly, it allows for continuous monitoring and adapting strategies on-the-go.
The Big Picture
Primarily, Wiener Stadtwerke’s corporate fleet dashboard is a valuable factor in streamlining the switch from conventional to electric vehicles – and making one of Vienna’s largest corporations more eco-friendly. On top of that, it is also a prime example of how large companies can benefit from data-based decision making. By visualizing a large amount of current, complex information, the dashboard streamlines internal processes and increases effectiveness – with decision makers being able to rely on precise data to make informed choices. Plus, a data-based approach also allows for constant monitoring and reporting, which adds more transparency to the entire process – a key factor of success for projects of this scale.
