Green Data Hub

Austria’s Hub for data-driven sustainability

As the resource of the digital age, data plays a key role in tackling the climate crisis. The Green Data Hub, initiated by the Data Intelligence Offensive (DIO) on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Climate Action, creates a collaborative platform where data providers, processors, and users work together for sustainability. Its goal is to build sovereign, secure, and interoperable data spaces that accelerate innovation in climate protection, energy, mobility, and the circular economy. The Hub marks a milestone toward a European, public-good-oriented data ecosystem.

How it works

At the heart of the Green Data Hub are digital data spaces – clearly structured, legally secured environments for cross-sectoral data exchange. Public institutions, businesses, NGOs, and research organizations can securely share and jointly use high-quality, standardized environmental data. The platform relies on cutting-edge information technology, robust platform architecture, and – where appropriate – artificial intelligence to analyze and interlink data assets.

A real-world example is the Data Space Circular Economy: Companies from various industries share data on material flows and product life cycles. This not only supports resource-efficient business practices but also facilitates compliance with European environmental regulations. The Hub thus fosters both technological innovation and data-driven policymaking – from smart urban planning to efficient climate monitoring.

The Big Picture

The Green Data Hub is more than just a technical solution – it is a strategic tool for the sustainable transformation of the economy and public administration. By breaking down data silos and enabling standardized access, it strengthens the innovative capacity of companies and the operational capability of authorities. Public institutions gain solid data foundations for climate and environmental policies. The quality of public services increases – for example, through data-based traffic planning or more precise environmental monitoring.

Most importantly, the Hub promotes transparency and collaboration on equal terms. It connects stakeholders along the entire sustainability value chain and builds trust in a public-good-oriented data economy. In doing so, it contributes to the achievement of national and European climate goals – and positions Austria as a pioneer in building green data infrastructures.
