Smart City Vienna: VIENNA 2030
Future-proofing Austria’s capital for the 21st century
Being constantly named as one of the most livable cities in various rankings around the world, the city of Vienna is fully committed to an active policy built on innovation and digitalization to ensure a flourishing and sustainable economy – the basis for securing a prosperous life for future generations. Based on policies laid out in the Smart City Vienna framework for 2019-2050, the “VIENNA 2030 – Economy & Innovation” aims to drive the growth of innovation by supporting city officials and administration to develop tailor-made solutions that effectively cater to the various needs of a big city – and successfully deal with current and future major challenges like climate change, digitalization and the rise of AI.
Quick Facts
How it works
Under the guidance of the Vienna Economic Council, the “VIENNA 2030” strategy has been rolled out through various flagship projects since the fall of 2019 with one clear aim: to build on already existing strategies and infrastructure to strengthen Vienna as a business hub and important international player, while maintaining and improving the high living standards that consistently place Vienna at the top of international leaderboards for quality of life.
To ensure the city is ready to successfully conquer global challenges like climate change, the ever-growing digitalization of processes and the rise of AI, as well as increased globalization and cultural shifts, the strategy focuses on six thematic areas:
- Smart Solutions for the urban living space of the 21st century
- Vienna as health metropolis
- Taking Vienna digital (e.g. WienBot)
- Smart production within a big city
- City of international encounters
- Vienna as a cultural and creative hub
All in all, these thematic areas cover a total of ten fields of action. These fields include education, universities & research, the labor market & top executives, protection of the environment & adjustment to climate change, the city’s infrastructure, an innovative city administration, creating an innovative and inspiring environment, as well as innovative regulatory measures, support structures and location marketing.
The Big Picture
A stable economy and its sustainable growth are key to maintaining a functioning city that will be as livable as it is now for generations to come – and ready to face the various global challenges of the years ahead. By driving technological and economic innovation, the VIENNA 2030 framework seamlessly aligns with previously and currently existing strategies to make Vienna’s city infrastructure and processes more efficient, and boost the city as a business location to firmly establish Vienna as a strong player on the international scene. A strategy that not only plays a key role in driving economic prosperity, but also in ensuring a high quality of life for all of Vienna’s current and future citizens.
