Transparency Portal

Transparent data analysis and promotion of efficiency in the public sector

The Transparency Portal provides a comprehensive overview of Austria’s funding landscape and serves as a query tool for the Transparency Database. The Transparency Database records various subsidies and grants from the federal government, the provinces, and municipalities to private individuals or companies, including transfers such as unemployment benefits and family allowances. These data are collected and processed in accordance with the Transparency Database Act. The Transparency Database functions as a “background system” where the responsible authorities input information on granted or disbursed funding.

Through the Transparency Portal, these data are visualized, with extended information available upon login. The initial focus was on aggregated data visualization for the Federal Ministry of Finance (BMF) and the public. In the next step, a non-aggregated data analysis option (anonymized) was implemented for internal use by the BMF.

How it works

As part of the Austrian Reporting Platform, the Transparency Portal is an application focused on the visual presentation and analysis of public funding. Its goal is to create transparency around the use of financial resources and to identify potential for increased efficiency.

The data are entered by all relevant funding organizations at the national and regional levels and collected in the Transparency Database. Through the Transparency Portal, the aggregated data are prepared for the government and the public. For internal use by the BMF, special analysis functions for data visualization and drill-down have been developed, enabling deeper analyses and specific search functions for evaluating funding data. Currently, the Transparency Database records and analyzes subsidies worth more than 300 billion euros.

The Big Picture

The Transparency Portal plays a key role in improving transparency and fraud prevention in the public sector, particularly in the analysis and control of public funding. Through the legal obligation to record funding data, the system enables in-depth analyses and cross-comparisons that support efficient financial management in the public sector. The platform also fosters public trust in the use of public funds and contributes to strengthening integrity in financial governance.
